Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has formally declared his interest in the Uasin Gishu governorship, positioning the complete transformation of Eldoret into a modern, functional city as the centrepiece of his 2027 campaign.
Bitok, popularly known in local politics as “Simba ni Moja,” said he is already developing a master plan aimed at turning Eldoret’s city status from a paper designation into a tangible economic and social reality for residents. Eldoret was elevated to city status two years ago, but Bitok argues that the upgrade has so far delivered little visible change on the ground.
His campaign will run under the slogan “Agenda ni Sita na City,” a six-point development plan focused on Eldoret and the wider county. “Since Eldoret was elevated to a city, that move has largely remained on paper, but I will focus on actualising it into a real modern city and a major economic hub for our region and beyond,” Bitok told .
As part of the early push, the Tourism Ministry plans to host World Tourism Day celebrations in Eldoret on September 27. Bitok described the event as a strategic opportunity to market the city, improve infrastructure, promote medical tourism, and streamline trade licensing to attract investment and spur growth.
Beyond physical infrastructure, Bitok said his agenda will prioritise the culture of the Kalenjin community and other local groups as a foundation for cohesion and unity. He also pledged to create opportunities for young people and women, generate employment, and address environmental concerns through a bottom-up approach aligned with President William Ruto’s vision. Beautification of Eldoret forms a key part of this plan.
Bitok is entering a crowded race. Incumbent Governor Jonathan Bii has confirmed he will seek a second term and has urged rivals to reconsider their ambitions. Businessman and politician Bundotich Kiprop, popularly known as Buzeki, is also expected to make another bid for the seat. Bitok previously lost in party primaries but has remained active in Uasin Gishu politics, building a network of supporters who cite his experience and policy focus as strengths.
Some residents already express confidence in his candidacy. Josephine Ruto, a local, said devolution has lagged in the county due to what she described as failed leadership, adding that Bitok possesses the experience, expertise and vision needed to take Uasin Gishu forward.
The emerging contest is expected to revolve around development priorities, the practical future of Eldoret as a city, service delivery, job creation and the broader economic direction of the county. With the 2027 general election still months away, Bitok is banking on a clear, city-centred agenda to differentiate himself and mobilise support in one of Kenya’s key Rift Valley counties.
Observers note that Eldoret’s growth potential remains significant given its strategic location, agricultural hinterland and status as a regional commercial hub. Whether Bitok can convert that potential into electoral success will depend on how effectively he sells his “Agenda ni Sita na City” vision against the records and promises of his rivals.
