Murkomen: Mashujaa Day Will Showcase Development Projects

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will showcase government development projects across the North Rift, with President William Ruto expected to inspect key infrastructure investments before the national event on October 20.

Murkomen said the celebrations would highlight projects designed to improve public services, create economic opportunities and expand access to essential infrastructure in Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

The national celebrations will take place at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, with the three counties co-hosting the event for the first time.

In a statement following consultations with regional leaders, Murkomen said preparations were progressing alongside plans for the President’s development tour of the region.

The tour is expected to cover road construction, markets, electricity connections, water infrastructure and affordable housing projects before culminating in the national celebrations.

The consultative meeting brought together Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang and Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich. Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President Josphat Nanok, Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok, Senators Jackson Mandago and William Kisang, as well as legislators from the region, also attended.

Murkomen said the government’s intention was to use the national event to draw attention to ongoing development programmes and their expected benefits to residents.

The preparations come as Eldoret and neighbouring counties step up work ahead of the October 20 celebrations. Government officials have been monitoring projects and coordinating activities intended to ensure the region is ready to host visitors from across the country.

Beyond the main ceremony, the programme includes sporting activities intended to encourage public participation and promote cohesion among residents of the three counties. The Mashujaa Day Champions Edition tournament features football, volleyball and athletics competitions, with organisers setting aside Sh63 million, mainly for prizes. <Cite refs={}/>

The government has also presented Mashujaa Day as an opportunity to recognise Kenyans who have contributed to the country’s history and progress while highlighting ongoing development initiatives.

For the North Rift, hosting the celebrations is expected to place the region’s infrastructure, sporting facilities and economic activities under national scrutiny.

The event will take place on October 20, when Kenyans commemorate heroes and heroines whose contributions have shaped the country’s independence, development and public life.
