Omollo Links Security to Economic Growth in North Rift

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said improved security is essential for economic growth, investment and infrastructure development in regions that have experienced insecurity.

Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the launch of the Mashujaa Day Thematic Week, Omollo said lasting peace enables businesses to operate, communities to engage in economic activities and development projects to benefit residents.

He pointed to improving security in the North Rift, saying communities were gradually resuming normal activities, children were returning to school and markets were reopening.

According to the PS, the progress demonstrates the link between security and livelihoods, with sustained peace needed to support long-term economic development.

Omollo also highlighted ongoing road infrastructure projects in the Kerio Valley, including the Kilang’ata-Tot-Kopasi and Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich road corridors.

He said the projects would improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and link communities to markets and essential services.

However, he stressed that infrastructure investments must be supported by effective security measures to create an environment where businesses can thrive and residents can benefit from improved transport networks.

The PS further called for continued investment in the National Police Service through recruitment, better welfare, training, modern equipment and technology.

He said a professional and well-equipped police service was necessary to strengthen security operations and build public confidence.

During a public engagement in Eldoret, residents raised concerns about insecurity in Langas Ward, citing robberies, house break-ins and physical attacks.

Omollo urged police officers, local institutions, landlords and residents to work together to address the challenges.

He emphasised the importance of sharing information promptly and involving communities in crime prevention. He also called for stronger coordination across the justice system to ensure reported cases are handled effectively.

Gender-based violence and femicide were also raised during the discussions, with participants calling for accountability, timely investigations and proper handling of criminal cases.

They further stressed the need to address social and economic challenges that expose vulnerable groups to abuse, alongside improving access to support services.

Omollo said sustainable development depended on creating a safe environment where people could live, work, study and invest without fear. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies in identifying and addressing threats.

The Mashujaa Day Thematic Week will also highlight the contribution of sports to national development.

Omollo cited Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Kapseret Stadium and Kamariny Stadium as facilities that support talent development, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in surrounding communities.

The week-long programme forms part of activities leading to the Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20 at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. The event is expected to showcase development initiatives and bring government services closer to the public.

The launch was attended by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector-General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, National Celebrations Thematic Committee Chairman Dennis Itumbi and Government Spokesperson Charles Owino, among other officials.
