Chinese Investors Eye Uasin Gishu for Major Solar Energy Projects

Uasin Gishu County is quickly becoming a top destination for international investment, especially in renewable energy. In a landmark development, three Chinese-based companies are setting up advanced energy projects at the African Economic Zone (AEZ) in Plateau, Eldoret.

This milestone follows Uasin Gishu’s recent elevation to city status and the successful hosting of the ICRECC Conference, both of which have helped elevate the county’s profile as an investment hotspot.

Cutting-Edge Solar Technology Coming to Eldoret

The incoming firms include SPIC New Energy Technology, Silver Grant International Holdings Group, and a third energy-focused Chinese company. These investors plan to develop solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing facilities, produce solar lanterns, and generate clean solar energy for supply to the national grid and local consumers within the AEZ.

SPIC New Energy Technology is internationally recognized for pioneering high-efficiency copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) and C-HJT solar cells, operating one of the world’s most advanced R&D centers in Nanchang. Silver Grant International, meanwhile, is known for its global investments in sustainable infrastructure and clean energy.

County Government Welcomes Strategic Partnership

The investor delegation, led by Mr. Qi Tianhui (Alex), General Manager of Pearl River SEZ Kenya, was warmly received by Deputy Governor Hon. Evans Kapkea and CEC for Water, Environment & Energy, Mr. Anthony Sitienei.

“This is a major win for Uasin Gishu and aligns perfectly with Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s Nguzo Kumi development blueprint,” said Hon. Kapkea. “We are committed to fully supporting these energy projects.”

Mr. Sitienei echoed the sentiments, adding:

“We are grateful for the trust these companies have shown. Our departments are ready to work hand-in-hand to ensure seamless implementation.”

National Support and Regulatory Facilitation

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) have pledged support, including fast-tracking licensing, regulatory compliance, and identifying off-grid areas in need of solar solutions.

A Bright Future for Uasin Gishu’s Energy Sector

These investments signal a bold new chapter for renewable energy in Uasin Gishu County. With a focus on job creation, innovation, and sustainable development, the projects are set to transform Eldoret into a regional hub for clean energy solutions.

“We look forward to a strong partnership with our Chinese counterparts,” stated the county government. “This collaboration takes us a step closer to becoming one of Kenya’s leading investment destinations.”

As the county attracts more global attention, Uasin Gishu is firmly positioning itself at the forefront of Kenya’s renewable energy transition.
