Kahoya Market Gets Major Facelift as Uasin Gishu County Commits to Boosting Local Trade

Uasin Gishu County has officially launched a transformative project to upgrade Kahoya Market, signaling a strong commitment to local economic empowerment and improved trading environments. The initiative, spearheaded by the County Department of Trade, aligns with Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s fourth development pillar: fostering a business-friendly environment across the region.

The upgrade—recently formalized through a signed contract between the County and the appointed contractor—marks the start of significant infrastructure improvements. These include the installation of modern market shadings and the laying of cabro pavements, designed to enhance safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency for traders and shoppers alike.

“This facelift is more than just a physical transformation—it is a symbol of economic dignity for our traders,” emphasized Trade Chief Officer Felix Kimaru. “It reflects the respect and recognition they deserve as key players in our economy.”

Kimaru also urged the contractor to uphold high construction standards and deliver the project within the agreed timelines. He noted that the project embodies the county’s broader goal of creating conducive conditions for small and medium enterprises to thrive.

Area MCA Hon. Wanjohi Kimani hailed the project as a “game-changing milestone” for the Kahoya community. “This initiative will dramatically improve business conditions and inspire growth. It’s a direct investment in the livelihoods of our people,” he said.

To ensure transparency and quality, the Kahoya Market Committee has pledged to actively supervise the construction process. This reflects the county’s dedication to public participation and accountability in all development efforts.

Also present at the project launch were Brenda Rono, Acting Director of Investment, and Edwin Korir, Principal Officer of Trade Development, who reiterated the county’s commitment to grassroots development and sustainable economic growth.

The facelift is expected to significantly increase foot traffic to the market, offering a renewed sense of hope and opportunity for local traders.

Once completed, Kahoya Market will emerge as a major economic hub, contributing to inclusive growth and improved livelihoods in Uasin Gishu County.
