A somber atmosphere enveloped the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Eldoret today as hundreds of faithful, clergy, and community members came together to honour the life of Rev. Fr. Allois Cheruiyot Bett, whose tragic killing on May 22 sent shockwaves throughout the local and religious communities.
Short but impactful ministry
Fr. Allois, remembered as a humble and devoted servant of God, had served in the Diocese of Eldoret for only six months before his untimely death shocked and saddened the community. Though his time in the diocese was brief, his presence had already left a deep and lasting impression on many.
The Holy Mass was presided over by Eldoret Diocese Bishop Dominic Kimengich and Auxiliary Bishop Rt. Rev. John Kiplimo arap Lelei. During the service, an official announcement from the diocese confirmed his death, as mourners filled the cathedral with silent prayers, tears, and deep reflection.
Bishop’s emotional Tributes
In a heartfelt address, Bishop Kimengich voiced his anguish and condemned the killing in strong terms.

Fr. Allois was hailed as a peacemaker — a leader whose calm strength and moral clarity inspired unity and reconciliation in a region often burdened by division. Many who knew him described him as gentle, compassionate, and deeply committed to his pastoral mission. His death, they said, was not just a loss to the church, but to the entire community.
“Why kill him in just six months? It feels like I have lost my own son,” he said, visibly shaken.
The bishop further warned that the nation had crossed a dangerous line if even priests—symbols of peace, faith, and healing—could be targeted with such violence. He urged the government and security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Fr. Allois, he said, had committed no crime; his only ‘offence’ was living a life of faith and service to others.

Life of Peace and Compassion
Emotions ran high as tributes poured in from friends, fellow clergy, parishioners, and civic leaders. Many expressed disbelief and sorrow, remembering Fr. Allois as a beacon of light who had just begun his journey in ministry.
Fr. Allois is set to be laid to rest later this week. The Diocese is expected to release full funeral arrangements in the coming days.
