Police in Eldoret have arrested two men suspected of operating a fake recruitment agency, duping over 100 young people with promises of jobs abroad.
The suspects, who were apprehended by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), were collecting money from the youth at Silver Line back street.
The ScamThe victims were promised jobs abroad and were told they would be ferried to Nairobi as part of the recruitment process.
However, it is alleged that the suspects were simply collecting a registration fee of Ksh. 2,400 from each victim.
Victims Camp at Police Station
On Tuesday night, over 100 youth camped at Eldoret Central Police station, demanding refunds of the money they had paid to the suspects.
The authorities intervened, asking the victims to leave and report to the station the following morning to record statements as the police commenced an investigation into the matter.
Investigation Underway
The police are currently holding the two suspects and are expected to charge them with fraud.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to establish the extent of the scam and identify all the victims.
Warning to Job Seekers
The police are urging job seekers to be cautious when dealing with recruitment agencies and to verify the authenticity of any job offer before making any payments.
The authorities are also warning the public to be aware of fake recruitment agencies that promise jobs abroad in exchange for money.
