Students Scammed by Unregistered College in Eldoret

Over 200 students in Eldoret are reeling from the shock of discovering that the institution they enrolled in—Medprime College—was operating illegally. The college, located on the fifth floor of Sirgoi House in Eldoret’s CBD, lacked registration by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

Students had signed up for various diploma and certificate programs in nursing, dental care, and caregiving, only to find out that their courses held no official accreditation. This revelation sparked a protest that saw hundreds of aggrieved learners take to the streets and later march to the Eldoret Police Station, demanding a refund of fees ranging from KSh 50,000 to KSh 170,000 per person.

“Our Dreams Are Crushed,” Students Say

One of the victims, a female student who requested anonymity, expressed deep frustration:

“Our parents sold livestock and farm produce to raise the fees. We feel devastated to find out that this was all a scam.”

The emotional and financial toll on families has been immense. For many, education was seen as a pathway out of poverty—only for that hope to be dashed by fraudsters.

Chaos at Medprime College

The protest caused a major disruption at Medprime College. Normal operations came to a halt as crowds gathered to witness the commotion. In the midst of the chaos, staff members and lecturers fled the premises, fearing retaliation. A receptionist confirmed that the institution’s leadership had vanished.

“I’m alone in the office. My boss left and hasn’t said where he’s gone,” she told local reporters.

Police Launch Investigation

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, Benjamin Mwanthi, confirmed that investigations into the college’s operations had commenced.

“We are taking this matter seriously. Our officers have started probing the allegations raised and will summon the institution’s leadership for questioning.”

He also urged affected students to file formal complaints with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to support the ongoing investigation.

A Wake-Up Call for Eldoret Residents

This incident has raised serious concerns about the increasing number of unregistered colleges in Eldoret. Students and parents are now being urged to verify the accreditation status of institutions through official NITA channels before making any payments.
