The Uasin Gishu County Fire Brigade swiftly responded to a distress call on Thursday, rescuing a man who attempted to end his life by setting himself on fire inside his house in Shambani village, on the outskirts of Eldoret City.
According to David Sitati, Uasin Gishu’s Chief Fire Officer, the man suffered severe burns before emergency responders arrived. Concerned neighbors had noticed smoke billowing from the house and immediately alerted the authorities.
Firefighters acted promptly, extinguishing the flames and rushing the victim to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for urgent medical attention.
“The man sustained extensive burns and other injuries. He is currently receiving treatment,” Sitati confirmed.
Residents revealed that the man had been living in isolation, rarely engaging with neighbors. While the precise reason behind his drastic action remains unclear, many speculate that mental health struggles, stress, or depression may have played a role.
Sitati emphasized the need for greater community awareness and compassion, urging people to check on their neighbors and offer emotional support.
“Neighbors mentioned that no one really interacted with him. As a society, we must take responsibility and support those in distress with care, love, and understanding,” he stated.
The incident has ignited conversations about mental health awareness in Uasin Gishu County, with many calling for increased psychosocial support for vulnerable individuals. Authorities have reiterated the importance of recognizing distress signals early and encouraging intervention to prevent such tragedies.
