Why Kenya Needs Katiba Shuleni 2026: Strengthening Constitutional Literacy for a Better Future

On 25 June 2024, Kenya experienced a defining moment in its democratic journey. More than sixty citizens lost their lives, and more incidents followed in the weeks after. What linked these events was a shared commitment to constitutionalism in Kenya. Despite intimidation, fear, and heavy resistance, Kenyans from diverse generations, regions, and backgrounds continued to speak out—both online and on the streets—driven by one united goal: respect for the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Protesters carried copies of the Constitution, national flags, and water, signalling a powerful message: the Constitution is the bedrock of the nation. Just as sacred texts ground religious communities, the Constitution anchors the country’s governance, rights, and identity. For Kenya to progress, its supreme law must be understood, upheld, and protected.

While civic education in Kenya exists, it does not reach every community. In addition, information can be shaped by personal or political bias. For Kenyans to engage meaningfully in national affairs, a clear and structured approach is essential. This need inspired Ng’ang’a Muigai to champion Katiba Shuleni 2026, a proposal to integrate constitutional literacy into the national curriculum.

The initiative urges Parliament to make the Constitution of Kenya 2010 a full, mandatory, and examinable subject—from primary school to tertiary level—through a new act, ideally the Katiba Shuleni 2026 Act, funded under the 2026/27 budget. Implemented through the Ministry of Education and KICD, this curriculum would empower generations with the knowledge needed to protect their rights and fulfill their responsibilities.

The benefits are transformative: improved accountability, stronger patriotism, better security, reduced crime, enhanced national unity, more global competitiveness, and greater honour for those who fought for Kenya’s freedoms.

If Kenya already holds a world-class constitution, then universal constitutional education is the blueprint for building a world-class nation.
