The national government has issued a fresh update on the progress of the Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project, a major development expected to reshape housing and urban planning in Eldoret City.
The project, located near the Eldoret railway area, is part of Kenya’s wider Affordable Housing Programme aimed at increasing access to decent and affordable homes for thousands of Kenyans. Recent updates from government officials show that construction is steadily progressing, with several structures already visible on site.
The development is expected to transform the area into a modern mixed-use residential and commercial zone once complete.
The Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project will deliver more than 2,100 housing units designed to serve different income groups.
The housing units will include:
- 530 social housing units
- 1,110 affordable housing units
- 540 market-rate housing units
Beyond residential apartments, the project will also include commercial spaces and supporting amenities. Plans indicate that the estate will feature around 65 shops, improved road networks, sewer systems, green spaces, and other community facilities.
The integrated design is intended to create a self-sustaining urban neighborhood where residents can live, work, and access services within the same area.
Construction of the Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project began in March 2025 and is expected to be completed by March 2027.
The project has also created significant employment opportunities for residents in and around Eldoret. Hundreds of workers are currently engaged at the construction site, including engineers, contractors, technicians, and casual laborers.
Women are also actively participating in the construction workforce, reflecting the government’s push for inclusive participation in major development projects.
The Railway City project is among several affordable housing developments being implemented in Eldoret as the city continues to expand rapidly.
Other estates under development in areas such as Pioneer, Kidiwa, and Kimumu are expected to add thousands of additional housing units to the market.
Once complete, the Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project is expected to ease housing pressure in the fast-growing city, stimulate local economic activity, and contribute to Eldoret’s transformation into a modern urban center.
