Hope for Justice as 15-Year-Old Girl Gives Emotional Testimony

In a heart-wrenching court hearing, a 15-year-old grade nine learner, V.K, not her real name, broke down in tears as she recounted her traumatic experience of being defiled by a matatu driver, Michael Okwoko, in an incident that occurred last year. The accused, who is out on bond, has denied the defilement charge facing him.

According to V.K’s testimony before Eldoret court presiding magistrate Naima Kirui, Okwoko had threatened to kill her if she revealed the heinous act to her foster mother, who she was staying with.

The prosecution has lined up five key witnesses, including the investigating officer and a medical doctor from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) who examined the schoolgirl.

The learner recalled that Okwoko, who plies the Eldoret-Chepkoilel route, had warned her to keep the incident a secret, lest he kills her.

On the fateful evening of October 15, 2025, V.K was coming from school when Okwoko committed the offence in his house, located in the Sinai area of Kimumu estate along the Eldoret-Iten highway in Uasin Gishu county.

In a chilling account, V.K narrated how Okwoko removed his trousers and her pants before defiling her.

After the incident, she changed her clothes and started doing some chores, including cleaning a nearby shop, which is a few metres from their house, where her foster mother runs.

The accused, who stays in the same plot with the victim’s family, walked to Ainabtich police station to report a break-in at his house, claiming that someone had tampered with his household properties.

However, his plan was foiled when the victim’s foster mother arrived at the station to report a case against him related to defilement, leading to his arrest and custody.

Okwoko has since denied the defilement charge facing him, but the prosecution is confident that they have enough evidence to prove their case.

The court hearing has adjourned to allow the prosecution to present their witnesses. The case has sparked outrage and concern among residents, who are calling for justice to be served.

“We are glad that the girl has found the courage to speak out,” said a community leader. “We hope that the court will deliver justice and that the accused will face the full weight of the law.”

The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of children, particularly in public transport.

“We need to be vigilant and ensure that our children are safe,” said a parent. “This incident is a wake-up call for all of us to take responsibility for the safety of our children.”

As the case continues, V.K’s bravery in speaking out has been hailed as a beacon of hope for victims of sexual assault.

Her story serves as a reminder that justice can be served, and that perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.

The community is rallying behind V.K, offering support and encouragement as she navigates this difficult time.

“We are with her, and we will ensure that she gets the justice she deserves,” said a community member.

The court hearing has brought attention to the critical issue of defilement and sexual assault, and the need for swift action to be taken against perpetrators.

As the case unfolds, one thing is certain: justice will be served, and V.K will not be silenced.
