Police in Uasin Gishu County have launched a manhunt for a woman accused of drugging former Olympic 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop before allegedly stealing Sh43,000 from him at an entertainment spot in Eldoret.
The incident reportedly happened at a high-end club on the outskirts of Eldoret City, where Kiprop had gone to enjoy a drink. Police say the woman later accompanied the athlete to a lodging facility in the Annex area along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway.
Langas Officer Commanding Police Division Sephania Kamuren confirmed that detectives are investigating the incident and are working to identify and apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
According to the police, Sh8,000 in cash was allegedly taken from Kiprop’s wallet, while another Sh35,000 was transferred from his mobile money account. His mobile phone was reportedly left behind.
Kiprop, a three-time 1,500m world champion and the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, told journalists that he met the woman at the club after noticing that she was drinking alone.
He said there was nothing about her appearance or behavior that initially raised suspicion. The two later began drinking together before deciding to spend the night at a nearby lodging facility.
However, Kiprop said his condition changed dramatically after they arrived at the room.
The athlete reported experiencing a severe reaction and eventually lost consciousness. He said he was unable to walk and remained asleep until the following afternoon.
When he regained consciousness, Kiprop said the woman was no longer at the premises. He then checked his belongings and discovered that the money in his wallet was missing. He also found that Sh35,000 had been withdrawn from his mobile money account.
Kiprop subsequently sought medical attention at Elgon View Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. He later reported the matter to Langas Police Station, prompting investigations into the alleged drugging and theft.
The former athlete has since urged people who visit entertainment establishments to exercise greater caution, particularly when accepting drinks or interacting with strangers.
Police have also appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify the suspect to report to the nearest police station.
Investigators are expected to examine available evidence as they establish what happened at the club, the lodging facility and during the alleged mobile money transaction.
The incident has also renewed concerns about cases in which revelers are allegedly drugged before being robbed in entertainment establishments.
Police have urged club patrons in Eldoret, particularly those frequenting areas around Annex, Langas and the central business district, to remain vigilant and avoid leaving their drinks unattended.
The allegations against the unidentified woman have not been tested in court. She remains a suspect, and police investigations are ongoing.
