Residents of Uasin Gishu are among Kenyans invited to participate in public hearings on six proposed Education Reform Bills that could introduce changes across the country’s education sector.
Parliament has opened public participation on the proposed legislation, giving residents of Uasin Gishu, Tana River, Kilifi and Elgeyo-Marakwet an opportunity to review the proposals and submit their views before the Bills proceed further through the legislative process.
In Uasin Gishu, the public participation forum will be held at the Eldoret National Polytechnic from 9am to 12:30pm.
The exercise gives residents, education stakeholders, teachers, students, parents and other interested groups an opportunity to raise concerns and suggest changes to the proposed laws.
The six Bills cover several areas of the education system, including tertiary education financing, teacher training, basic education, curriculum development, national assessments and qualifications.
One of the proposals is the Tertiary Education, Placement and Funding Bill, 2026, which seeks to provide a legal framework for tertiary education placement and funding.
Parliament is also seeking views on the Pre-Service Education and In-Service Training Bill, 2026, which addresses the training of teachers before entering the profession as well as continued professional development.
The Basic Education (Amendment) Bill, 2026 is another proposal listed for public participation. It seeks to introduce changes to the existing legal framework governing basic education.
The other Bills are the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Kenya National Educational Assessments Council Bill, 2026 and the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The proposals come at a time when questions surrounding education financing, teacher preparation, curriculum implementation, assessment and recognition of qualifications continue to attract public attention.
Residents participating in the Eldoret forum will therefore have an opportunity to place their views directly before Parliament and raise issues affecting learners, teachers and education institutions in the region.
In Tana River, the hearing will take place at Garsen Training and Vocational College from 9am to 12:30pm.
Residents of Kilifi will submit their views at Ngala Memorial Girls Secondary School in Malindi from 3pm to 6pm. In Elgeyo-Marakwet, the afternoon session will be held at the County Headquarters in Iten during the same period.
Parliament has urged residents in the four counties to take advantage of the hearings and participate in the legislative process.
The institution said public participation is intended to promote transparency and accountability while allowing citizens to influence laws that affect them.
The views collected during the county forums are expected to inform Parliament’s consideration of the proposed education legislation as the Bills move through the various stages of lawmaking.
For Uasin Gishu residents, the Eldoret session provides a direct opportunity to question the proposed reforms, recommend amendments and raise issues they believe should be addressed before the legislation becomes law.
