The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) has earned international recognition after being ranked among the world’s higher education institutions for sustainability in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
TENP emerged as the top TVET institution in Kenya and was ranked 82nd in Africa, according to the 2026 rankings announced in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Globally, the polytechnic was placed 1,547th in the overall sustainability ranking.
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an international initiative launched by the University of Indonesia in 2010 to assess the sustainability efforts of universities and other higher education institutions around the world.
The 2026 edition, the 17th since its launch, includes institutions from 110 countries and assesses their sustainability performance across seven areas.
These include infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water conservation, transportation, education and research, as well as governance and digitisation.
TENP Chief Principal Dr Charles Koech said the recognition reflected the institution’s efforts to establish an environmentally sustainable learning environment.
“This is a testament to our commitment to a green, clean and sustainable learning environment. Congratulations to the entire TENP family!” Koech said.
He thanked the institution’s Board of Management, staff, students and the wider Eldoret community for supporting its sustainability programmes and initiatives.
Koech also commended the national government for its investment in higher education, particularly the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector.
“We are also proud of our government, especially President William Ruto, who has shown rare commitment to the growth of higher education in the country, particularly the TVET sector,” he said.
TENP has a student population of more than 20,000 learners and regularly hosts local and international delegations interested in benchmarking its academic programmes, institutional management and operations.
The sustainability ranking adds to a series of recent achievements by the Eldoret-based institution.
In April, TENP students and tutors returned from Nyeri with 17 trophies after taking part in the Kenya National Drama Festivals.
Koech, accompanied by senior managers, received the trophies and led celebrations at the institution.
He said the performance demonstrated TENP’s growing profile beyond academic programmes, highlighting its achievements in co-curricular activities and its focus on holistic student development.
The latest GreenMetric ranking further places environmental sustainability among the institution’s growing areas of international recognition.
