New Eldoret MTRH Hospital to Have 2,000 Beds in First Phase

The new Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Specialty Hospital under construction in Eldoret will have 2,000 beds in its first phase, including dedicated units for critically ill patients.

The facility is being developed on a 200-acre site in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County, near Eldoret Airstrip, to ease congestion at the existing MTRH and expand access to specialised medical services.

According to information shared by Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on X, the project forms part of the government’s wider plans to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The first phase will include 60 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and 120 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, while the project’s master plan targets a total capacity of 4,000 beds.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is overseeing the implementation of the project, which is expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to handle complex medical cases and reduce pressure on existing referral facilities.

The hospital complex will also feature a student village for medical trainees and researchers, providing facilities to support specialist training, innovation and medical research.

Once operational, the facility is expected to serve millions of people across the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the wider East African region.

Its expanded capacity could improve access to advanced treatment for patients who travel to Eldoret and other major cities in search of specialised medical services.

The development is also expected to support Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) objectives under the Social Health Authority (SHA), which is responsible for the country’s current health insurance framework.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has linked access to essential services, including healthcare, to national security and community wellbeing.

The hospital’s planned combination of specialised treatment, medical education and research is expected to strengthen Eldoret’s role as a regional healthcare centre.

However, the project’s total cost, construction timeline and expected opening date were not provided in the information shared by the principal secretary.

The first phase will establish the foundation for the planned 4,000-bed complex, with the eventual capacity expected to expand the range of services available to patients from Kenya and neighbouring countries.
