Ruto Hands Over 2,157 Homes at Eldoret Housing Estate

President William Ruto has handed over keys to 2,157 homeowners at the Pioneer Affordable Housing Project in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County, marking a major milestone in the government’s plan to expand access to decent and affordable housing.

The President commissioned the Sh5.3 billion development on Sunday, October 18, 2026, as the government continued to implement its Affordable Housing Programme aimed at helping more Kenyans own homes while creating employment opportunities in the construction industry.

The Pioneer estate is designed to accommodate families in a residential setting equipped with commercial, educational and recreational facilities.

The development features 104 shops, a kindergarten, playgrounds, green open spaces, a clubhouse and a swimming pool. Plans also include a junior school, two basketball courts and a football pitch to serve residents and support community activities.

The facilities are expected to provide residents with access to essential services and recreational spaces within the estate, while the shops will offer opportunities for small businesses to serve the growing residential population.

Speaking during the commissioning, Ruto said the affordable housing programme was also creating opportunities for people working in the creative economy, including local artists engaged to decorate buildings.

The President said the involvement of artists, particularly painters, had opened additional avenues for employment while improving the appearance of housing developments.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to integrate the creative industry into public infrastructure projects, allowing artists to earn income through their skills and contribute to the design of residential spaces.

Housing and job creation

The Pioneer project is among the government’s investments intended to address Kenya’s housing deficit by increasing the supply of affordable homes for households that might otherwise struggle to purchase property in the private market.

The construction sector is also a key beneficiary of the programme through employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers involved in building homes and supporting infrastructure.

The projects create demand for construction materials, transport services, engineering, plumbing, electrical installation and other related services. Small businesses operating around housing developments may also benefit from increased economic activity.

For Eldoret, the completion of the Pioneer estate adds to the city’s expanding residential developments as demand for housing and supporting services grows.

The project also introduces a range of shared facilities intended to serve residents beyond the provision of individual housing units.

Expanding homeownership in Eldoret

The handover comes as the government continues to promote affordable housing as part of its wider development agenda, with an emphasis on improving living conditions and widening access to homeownership.

The Pioneer estate’s combination of housing, commercial premises, schools and recreational facilities is intended to support a residential community where families can access several services within the development.

However, the long-term impact of the project will depend partly on the affordability of the homes to beneficiaries, the cost of maintaining shared facilities and the effective management of the estate.

The commissioning places Eldoret among the urban centres benefiting from the government’s housing programme, which seeks to increase the availability of planned residential developments while supporting employment and local economic activity.

The handover of the 2,157 homes marks a significant step for the beneficiaries, many of whom will now begin settling into a development designed to combine residential living with commercial and recreational amenities.
