Kenya, China Discuss $180 Million AI Project Set for Eldoret

Kenya and China are exploring a proposed $180 million (approximately KSh 23 billion) artificial intelligence investment in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, in a move that could position the city as an emerging technology hub in East Africa.

The proposed investment is expected to support the first phase of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cloud Data Project, which would establish infrastructure for artificial intelligence development and cloud computing in the country.

The proposal emerged during discussions between Kenyan officials and China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, as the two countries explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the digital economy.

During the engagement, Kenya emphasised the importance of ensuring that any partnership respects the country’s laws, protects citizens’ personal data and supports national development priorities.

If implemented, the project could significantly strengthen Kenya’s technological capabilities by providing infrastructure to support the development, storage and processing of digital information.

Cloud computing technology allows organisations and individuals to store, access and process information through internet-based systems rather than relying entirely on physical computers and storage devices.

The proposed Eldoret facility could therefore provide an important foundation for developing locally driven artificial intelligence solutions across different sectors of the economy.

Kenya and China Explore AI Skills Development

Beyond the proposed infrastructure investment, the discussions also covered plans to strengthen artificial intelligence skills among Kenyans.

The two sides explored opportunities to train young people and professionals in developing, managing and applying AI technologies.

Such initiatives could help prepare Kenya’s workforce for emerging opportunities in technology while supporting innovation, entrepreneurship and digital transformation.

The discussions also touched on the possibility of Kenya accessing funding from a larger $5 billion financing facility associated with the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.

What the Proposed AI Project Means for Eldoret

For Eldoret, the proposed investment could create new opportunities beyond its traditional identity as an agricultural and athletics centre.

The city, which serves as the administrative headquarters of Uasin Gishu County, could attract technology-related investments, skilled professionals and businesses if the project moves into implementation.

It could also strengthen the city’s position as a growing economic centre in Kenya, particularly in the technology and digital innovation sectors.

However, the proposed $180 million funding should not be confused with an approved or disbursed grant.

As of November 5, 2026, the publicly available information describes the funding as a proposal under discussion. Details regarding the final financing agreement, implementation timeline, construction arrangements and management of the proposed infrastructure have not yet been established.

The next stage will depend on whether Kenya and China reach a formal agreement outlining the project’s financing, implementation and operational arrangements.

If realised, the initiative could mark a significant step towards expanding Kenya’s artificial intelligence infrastructure while placing Eldoret on the map as a potential destination for major technology investments.
