Construction of the new Sh29 billion multispecialty hospital at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret has reached 11 per cent completion, with the first phase expected to transform access to specialised medical services in Kenya and the wider East African region.
The first phase of the ambitious project, located in Kiplombe on the outskirts of Eldoret, will feature a 2,000-bed hospital built on 45 acres of land. Contractors have assured the government that the facility will be completed by March 2027, according to a report by The Star..
The progress was highlighted during an inspection tour by the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health, which visited the site to assess the implementation of the project and the utilisation of public funds allocated to the hospital.
The delegation was led by Kilgoris Member of Parliament Julius Sunkuli, who expressed optimism about the pace of construction and described the proposed hospital as a major healthcare investment for Africa.
Sunkuli said the committee would return to the site in January 2027 to assess progress, noting that Parliament had ensured the necessary funds were released to support the project.
The hospital is expected to expand Eldoret’s role as a regional healthcare hub, providing advanced medical services to patients who currently travel to Nairobi, India and other destinations in search of specialised treatment.
MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr Philip Kirwa said the new facility would offer a broad range of specialised services, including nuclear medicine, alongside modern operating theatres, laboratories and advanced diagnostic facilities.
He added that the hospital would also serve as an international centre for medical research and medical tourism, attracting patients and researchers from across the region and beyond.
The development is expected to strengthen the capacity of Kenya’s public healthcare system to manage complex medical conditions while reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatment abroad.
Beyond improving access to healthcare, the project could create economic opportunities for Eldoret and surrounding communities through demand for construction materials, transport, accommodation, food services and other businesses supporting the development.
The hospital’s establishment is also expected to reinforce Eldoret’s growing profile as a centre for specialised healthcare, education and research in the North Rift region.
