“Empowering our farmers with the right tools and knowledge is essential,” said Governor Bii. “This is how we build a self-sustaining economy rooted in agriculture.”

Uasin Gishu County is stepping up its game when it comes to livestock farming. In a major move aimed at transforming the sector, Governor Jonathan Bii’s administration has unveiled a strategic plan to improve livestock quality, boost farmer incomes, and drive sustainable economic growth.

The journey toward a more productive livestock industry took center stage during a public auction held at Chebororwa Agricultural Training Centre—a moment that not only showcased top-tier animals but also signaled a renewed commitment to agricultural excellence.

A Vision for High-Quality Livestock

At the heart of this county-wide initiative is a focus on superior livestock genetics and access to Artificial Insemination (AI) services. These efforts are designed to help local farmers breed healthier, more productive animals that can withstand disease and deliver higher yields.

“Empowering our farmers with the right tools and knowledge is essential,” said Governor Bii. “This is how we build a self-sustaining economy rooted in agriculture.”

By providing easier access to AI services, the county hopes to phase out low-yield livestock and introduce high-performance breeds, thereby increasing both meat and milk production across the region.

Training, Support & Farmer Empowerment

Beyond genetics, Uasin Gishu is investing heavily in training and capacity-building programs. These programs—hosted at agricultural hubs like Chebororwa—equip farmers with modern skills in animal husbandry, nutrition, disease control, and farm management.

Local farmers like Paul Kiptoo, who attended the auction, say the support is already paying off.

“I’ve seen a big difference in my animals since I started using AI services,” Kiptoo said. “Now I know how to manage them better, and it’s showing in my yields.”

A Model for Livestock Development in Kenya

Governor Bii’s long-term goal is to establish Uasin Gishu as a regional leader in livestock farming. By aligning local agricultural practices with modern innovations, the county is building a blueprint for success that other regions may soon follow.

The plan also includes partnerships with stakeholders in the private sector, research institutions, and NGOs to expand reach and scale up results.

Looking Ahead

As the program gains momentum, residents and farmers across the county can expect better returns, improved food security, and new opportunities in agribusiness.

This bold strategy is more than just a livestock upgradeit’s a vision for a thriving rural economy powered by knowledge, innovation, and local leadership.
