3,000 Soy Households to Benefit from Subsidised Gas Yako Programme

Soy Member of Parliament David Kiplagat has launched a public participation exercise aimed at identifying 3,000 households to benefit from a subsidised clean cooking programme under the Gas Yako initiative.

The programme, dubbed Operation Ondoa Moshi Phase I, seeks to promote the adoption of cleaner cooking methods by making gas cookers and cylinders more affordable for residents.

Under the initiative, selected households will acquire a gas cooker and cylinder package valued at KSh 6,500 at a subsidised cost of just KSh 500.

The government will contribute KSh 5,000 towards the package, while the MP’s office will provide an additional KSh 1,000, leaving beneficiaries to cover the remaining amount.

According to information shared by Kiplagat, the initiative aims to reduce household cooking expenses, improve safety and protect families from the health risks associated with smoke produced by traditional cooking methods.

Public Participation Exercise

The identification exercise is scheduled to take place from November 2 to November 6, 2026, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at polling stations across Soy Constituency.

Details on specific polling stations and venue allocations are expected to be announced ahead of the exercise.

Residents seeking to benefit from the programme are expected to participate in the public engagement process to facilitate the identification of eligible households.

Promoting Affordable Clean Energy

The Gas Yako initiative forms part of broader efforts to expand access to affordable and cleaner cooking energy while easing the financial burden on households amid rising living costs.

Kiplagat said the programme is intended to deliver practical benefits to residents by reducing the cost of acquiring cooking gas and encouraging families to move away from traditional cooking methods that expose them to harmful smoke.

The first phase targets 3,000 households, with the potential to improve access to cleaner cooking solutions and contribute to better health and environmental outcomes.

The initiative is expected to offer participating families an opportunity to adopt modern cooking methods at a significantly reduced cost, as efforts continue to make clean energy more accessible to ordinary households in Soy Constituency.
