Honoring the Spirit of Madaraka in Eldoret

The 62nd Madaraka Day was more than a ceremony—it was a reminder of our collective journey from colonial rule to independence.

The focus keyword “Madaraka Day in Eldoret” was central to this year’s celebration, attended by top county leaders, including County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale and Deputy Governor H.E. Evans Kapkea.

Dr. Nyale praised the county’s economic growth and called for continued unity and patriotism, urging residents to work hand in hand with the government for a prosperous future.

“We have much to celebrate,” Dr. Nyale emphasized. “But more importantly, we have a duty to remain united and work together for sustained progress.”

A Local Perspective on National Themes

Aligning with the Blue Economy Vision

The national theme, “The Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” was creatively tied into Uasin Gishu’s own goals through the Nguzo Kumi development blueprint. While Uasin Gishu isn’t coastal, the principles of sustainability, innovation, and equitable resource use are central to its strategy.

Deputy Governor Kapkea shared how the county is taking real action:

  • Nguzo Kumi guides all local development.
  • Major projects like the Meibeki and Moiben Water Projects are now easing water access.
  • The Moiben project is already 90% complete, drastically reducing the distance residents must walk for clean water.

Health and Infrastructure Take Center Stage

Healthcare is another pillar under Nguzo Kumi. The county government recently distributed Ksh. 21 million worth of medical supplies across 138 health facilities. This follows an earlier investment of Ksh. 40 million, reinforcing the county’s commitment to accessible and continuous healthcare.

Why It Matters to You

Whether you live in Elgon View, Kapseret, or the outskirts of Moiben:

  • You benefit from cleaner water
  • Local health centers are better stocked
  • Roads and services are more accessible thanks to devolution

“Devolution has brought governance closer to the people,” Kapkea said. “It has enhanced service delivery, promoted inclusive participation, and fostered accountability.”

Community Spirit and Leadership Presence

The event drew together top county officials—County Secretary Philip Melly, area MCAs like Kipchumba Chepng’eno, and dozens of CECMs and COs. Their united presence was a testament to the county’s dedication to progress.

Looking Ahead: A Stronger, More United Uasin Gishu

As Eldoret continues to grow, celebrations like Madaraka Day in Eldoret are a vital reminder of where we’ve come from and where we’re headed. With clean water projects nearly complete, upgraded health systems, and continued infrastructure growth, Uasin Gishu is positioning itself as a true engine of transformation in the Rift Valley.
