Residents of Uasin Gishu County, including Eldoret, have been placed on alert following a Moderate to Heavy Rainfall Advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department. The advisory warns of sustained rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours across several regions of the country.
According to the department, the advisory took effect on the afternoon of February 25 and is expected to remain active until 9:00 pm on March 3, 2026. While heavy rains are already being experienced in many parts of Kenya, meteorologists project the intensity to spread into sections of Northeastern Kenya between February 25 and February 28.
From March 1, rainfall intensity is expected to ease in areas such as the Southeastern lowlands, the Coastal region, and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi. However, conditions are expected to remain severe in the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, where Uasin Gishu falls, with heavy rainfall likely to persist through the end of the advisory period.
Counties listed under the advisory include Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kericho, Nakuru, Narok, and Uasin Gishu, among others.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has urged residents in affected areas to exercise heightened caution. Members of the public are advised to stay alert for flooding and flash floods, including in downstream areas where rainfall may not be immediately visible. Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned against crossing flooded roads, as strong currents and reduced visibility pose serious risks. The ministry also warns against sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms due to the increased risk of lightning strikes.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents to stay informed through official weather updates.
