In a strategic move to enhance urban sanitation services, the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) has partnered with Water and Sanitation for Urban Populations (WSUP) to complete the National Sanitation Services (NSS) Capacity Assessment. This collaboration reflects a shared vision of achieving Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) and is anchored in a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ELDOWAS and WSUP.

The NSS Capacity Assessment is a critical milestone in understanding and addressing gaps in sanitation delivery. The workshop, held to validate key findings of the assessment, brought together stakeholders to evaluate the performance of the sanitation ecosystem in Eldoret. The assessment focused on eight essential building blocks that define effective and sustainable sanitation services:

  1. Leadership and governance
  2. Institutional arrangements
  3. Regulation
  4. Citywide planning
  5. Monitoring and evaluation
  6. Service delivery models
  7. Behavior change and user engagement
  8. Finance

By identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement, ELDOWAS is paving the way for a more robust and resilient sanitation framework that supports inclusive growth.

This partnership goes beyond compliance. It is a proactive effort to foster innovation in sanitation planning, resource mobilization, and public health outcomes. The findings from the assessment will guide strategic planning, improve service delivery, and ensure regulatory frameworks are not only met but exceeded.

As part of this initiative, ELDOWAS continues to work closely with Fresh Life, a key implementation partner, to explore and expand alternative sanitation models tailored to informal settlements and underserved communities. Together, these efforts are a testament to ELDOWAS’s commitment to delivering dignified, safe, and accessible sanitation for every resident of Eldoret.

This initiative directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 6.2, which aims to ensure access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all. By embedding sustainability and inclusivity into its operational framework, ELDOWAS is aligning its work with global development standards.

Through strategic partnerships and evidence-based planning, ELDOWAS is not only strengthening regulatory compliance but also driving systemic change in the sanitation sector. The journey toward citywide inclusive sanitation is a continuous one, but with collaborative efforts like this, a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable future for Eldoret is well within reach.
