A bold daylight robbery by impostors posing as Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) employees was thwarted thanks to a quick-thinking homeowner and the swift response of security forces.
Robbery Attempt in Eldoret Foiled
On Thursday, residents of an Eldoret neighborhood were shaken after a group of individuals pretending to be ELDOWAS workers attempted to gain access to a private home under false pretenses. The suspects claimed they were there to fix a solar panel and requested a ladder. However, their intentions turned violent when the homeowner refused to let them in.
Armed with a metal bar, the impostors forced their way into the residence, assaulted the homeowner, and attempted to rob him of valuables. Fortunately, the homeowner raised the alarm, drawing the attention of security officers stationed nearby.
One Suspect Shot, Others Escape
During the attempted escape, one of the suspects—Luvira Muhati—was shot in the left hand by police. His accomplices managed to flee on foot, leaving him behind. Police intervened just in time to stop a potential case of mob justice, rushing the injured suspect to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) under tight security.
After receiving treatment, Muhati was arraigned before the Eldoret Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He faces charges of robbery with violence, contrary to Section 295(2) of the Penal Code.
Court Proceedings and Investigations
Inspector Joyce Tunge, who is leading the investigation, revealed that the suspects had been targeting homes in Eldoret, pretending to be utility workers from ELDOWAS to gain access. She requested a 10-day detention order for further investigations, citing the suspect’s unknown residence and flight risk. The court granted the application without objection.
Investigations are ongoing, with police seeking the remaining five suspects who escaped the scene. The suspect and the complainant are yet to complete their medical evaluations and official statements, which will be crucial to the case.
Community Praise for Police Response
Residents and local authorities have praised the homeowner’s vigilance and the rapid response by police officers, which helped prevent a more serious outcome. The incident underscores the importance of verifying the identity of service providers and staying alert to suspicious activity.
What’s Next?
Luvira Muhati will remain in custody at Eldoret Police Station for 10 more days. His case is scheduled for mention on May 6, 2025, as investigations continue.
