Empowering Local Farmers Through Sustainable Agriculture
Over 500 farmers in Uasin Gishu County have been equipped with vital skills in coffee and avocado farming through a transformative training held in Tulwet Chuiyat Ward, Kesses Sub-County. The training is part of the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLOCA), which promotes climate-smart agriculture and environmental resilience.
Training Highlights and Key Lessons
The program, conducted in three interactive sessions, focused on:
- Land preparation and soil health
- Seedling care and planting techniques
- Pest and disease control
- Harvesting and post-harvest handling
- Marketing strategies for high-value crops
Farmers also benefited from practical case studies, including that of Mr. Chelule, a local farmer who earned over Ksh. 3 million from four acres of coffee—a powerful testament to the potential profitability of modern farming.
Government Support and Vision
The initiative is backed by the County Government of Uasin Gishu as part of its commitment to diversify income sources and promote sustainable development. Governor H.E. Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, who recently flagged off the distribution of 166,000 coffee seedlings, expressed his vision:
“We are committed to creating millionaires from our own farms,” Governor Bii remarked. “With the right support, our farmers can thrive through coffee and avocado farming.”
Promoting Climate-Resilient Farming
The training featured climate change specialists and agricultural experts who offered insights into adapting farming practices to the changing climate. Ms. Ann Chepkoech, Climate Change Officer in Kesses, highlighted the rising demand for high-value crops and the need for innovation at the grassroots level.
Expanding the Impact
Seedling distribution will soon extend to Tapsagoi Ward in Turbo Sub-County, scaling the program’s reach and impact. According to CEC for Environment, Mr. Anthony Sitienei, and Chief Officer Mark Some, the initiative will enhance food security, boost rural incomes, and support Uasin Gishu’s green agenda.
Conclusion: A New Dawn for Farming in Uasin Gishu
The FLLOCA initiative is more than just training—it’s a gateway to economic empowerment and environmental sustainability. By equipping farmers with knowledge and resources, Uasin Gishu County is unlocking a greener, more prosperous future.
