Coffee farming is on the rise in Uasin Gishu County, with growing support from both the government and local farmers. Once seen as a niche crop, coffee is now gaining recognition as a profitable and sustainable agricultural venture, offering long-term income opportunities for farmers across the region.
Governor Bii Champions Coffee as a Game-Changer
Governor Jonathan Bii is leading a robust campaign to scale up coffee production throughout the county. In a recent statement on his official Facebook page, the Governor highlighted the growing interest among farmers in adopting coffee as a viable high-value crop.
“The momentum for coffee farming continues to grow, with more farmers in our county embracing it as a viable and rewarding venture alongside other high-value crops,” said Governor Bii.
Scaling Up: From 383,000 to 1 Million Coffee Seedlings
To meet increasing demand and enhance production, the County Government of Uasin Gishu has announced plans to distribute 1 million coffee seedlings this planting season—more than double last year’s 383,000.
Governor Bii affirmed that this move is part of a broader strategy to empower farmers and unlock the full potential of the coffee value chain.
“We are keen on scaling up this potential… empowering even more farmers to tap into the coffee value chain,” he added.
Diversifying Agriculture for Sustainable Growth
Coffee is the second most traded commodity globally after oil, and its expansion in Uasin Gishu signals a shift toward diversified, resilient agriculture. With ongoing support, including access to quality seedlings, training, and market linkages, the crop is set to play a pivotal role in the county’s economic transformation.
The county’s investment in coffee farming not only enhances food security but also aligns with its vision of making agriculture more profitable and climate-smart.
