Motorists in Eldoret are among drivers expected to be affected by the NTSA Instant Traffic Fines System, a new digital enforcement framework designed to penalize traffic offenders immediately after violations occur.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has already launched Phase 1 of the system in Nairobi, where the platform is now live and actively issuing instant fines for minor traffic offences. The initiative aims to modernize traffic enforcement, reduce corruption, and improve compliance with road safety regulations.
Instead of lengthy court processes for minor offences, drivers caught violating traffic rules will now receive instant fines that can be paid digitally through official government platforms.
Following the Nairobi rollout, NTSA plans to expand the system in Phase 2 during early 2026.
The next phase will target major urban centres including:
- Mombasa
- Kisumu
- Nakuru
- Eldoret
For Eldoret, which has seen rapid growth in population and vehicle numbers, the system is expected to significantly change how traffic laws are enforced.
Busy roads such as Uganda Road, Oloo Street, the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway, and the Eldoret–Webuye route could see stricter enforcement once the system is activated in the town.
The new system focuses mainly on minor traffic offences, allowing motorists to pay fines instantly without appearing in court.
Some of the offences and their penalties include:
Driver Documentation
- Driving without a valid driving licence – KSh7,000
- Failure to renew a driving licence – KSh1,000
- Failure to carry or produce a driving licence – KSh1,000
Road Conduct
- Driving without number plates – KSh10,000
- Obstructing traffic – KSh10,000
- Ignoring traffic signs – KSh3,000
- Failing to stop when directed by a police officer – KSh5,000
- Driving on pedestrian walkways – KSh5,000
Driver Behaviour
- Using a mobile phone while driving – KSh2,000 – KSh3,000
- Exceeding speed limits – KSh500 to KSh10,000 depending on severity
Vehicle Safety Violations
- Driving without a valid vehicle inspection certificate – KSh10,000
- Failure to install a speed governor in PSV vehicles – KSh10,000
- Illegal tinted windows in PSV vehicles – KSh2,000
- Failure to install seat belts (per seat) – KSh1,000
- Failure to wear a seat belt – KSh500
Once Phase 2 begins, motorists in Eldoret could start receiving instant digital penalties immediately after committing traffic violations.
Authorities believe the system will help reduce road accidents, improve discipline among drivers, and streamline enforcement in Kenya’s rapidly expanding urban centres.
For Eldoret motorists, the message is clear: traffic violations could soon attract immediate fines without the option of lengthy court processes.
