Eldoret, one of Kenya’s fastest growing urban centers and the fifth city in the country, is set for a major transformation in its road infrastructure. This development follows President William Ruto’s recent state visit to China, where several key bilateral agreements were signed to support infrastructure and economic development.
Strategic Agreements to Enhance Urban Connectivity
During the high-level diplomatic visit, President Ruto oversaw the signing of more than 20 agreements with the Chinese government. These agreements span sectors such as transport, energy, and digital economy, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure development. Among the flagship projects is the long-awaited expansion of the Eldoret Bypass.
The Eldoret Bypass is part of a larger vision to strengthen transport links along the vital Nairobi to Malaba corridor, which is a critical artery for trade across East Africa. Once completed, the expanded road is expected to ease congestion within Eldoret town, reduce travel times, and enhance the movement of goods and passengers throughout the region.
Suam to Eldoret Road Project Set to Strengthen Cross Border Links
Another key project gaining momentum is the Suam to Endebess to Kitale to Eldoret Road, which is being co-financed by the African Development Bank. This road serves as a vital connection between Kenya and Uganda and plays a pivotal role in facilitating cross border trade.
Improved access on this route is expected to reduce vehicle operating costs and open up new opportunities for businesses along the corridor. Local farmers, traders, and transporters are especially optimistic about the project’s potential to increase economic activity and improve livelihoods.
Delays in World Bank Funded Projects Stir Public Frustration
While these new projects bring hope, not all infrastructure developments in Eldoret have progressed smoothly. Road construction works under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvements Project, funded by the World Bank, have experienced delays due to funding challenges. This has led to growing frustration among residents, particularly in densely populated estates that rely on these upgrades.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has acknowledged the stalled works and assured residents that his administration is actively engaging with partners to fast track the resumption of these projects.
A New Era for Eldoret’s Urban Growth
President Ruto’s engagements in China reflect a broader strategy to leverage international partnerships for national development. With fresh funding commitments and technical expertise secured, Eldoret is well positioned to evolve into a key economic and logistics hub in the Rift Valley and beyond.
As road networks improve and travel becomes more efficient, the city’s residents can expect better service delivery, increased investment, and enhanced quality of life. Eldoret is on the brink of a new era where better roads will lead to broader opportunities for all.
