The ongoing upgrade of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, has reached 69 per cent completion as preparations intensify for the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Defence PS Patrick Mariru inspected the works at the stadium on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as the Ministry of Defence continues to oversee the project ahead of the national celebrations scheduled for October 20.
The celebrations will be jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, with Eldoret serving as the main venue.
Mariru said the inspection was aimed at assessing progress, addressing emerging challenges and ensuring that the works remain within the required standards and timelines.
Several components of the stadium are taking shape as contractors work to complete the upgrade ahead of the national event.
The Defence PS was accompanied by the Chief of Special Projects at Defence Headquarters, Brigadier Titus Sokobe.
The Ministry of Defence is supervising the works as part of preparations to ensure Eldoret is ready to host the national celebrations.
Beyond Mashujaa Day, the upgraded facility is expected to provide a modern sporting venue for athletes and other sporting activities in the region.
The stadium carries particular significance for Eldoret, a city with a long association with athletics and other sporting activities.
The October 20 celebrations are expected to bring together national leaders, residents and visitors from across the country, with preparations also involving other facilities and infrastructure around the city.
The government has previously indicated that the Mashujaa Day celebrations will provide an opportunity to showcase the region’s contribution to Kenya’s development and sporting heritage.
