Eldoret is set to receive a packer garbage truck from the City of Minneapolis in the United States as part of the ongoing sister-city partnership between the two cities.
The City of Minneapolis, through its Director of Public Works Tim Sexton, officially handed over the garbage truck, which is ready for shipment to Kenya.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said the donation was a direct outcome of engagements held last year during the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Eldoret and Minneapolis.
“Today, the City of Minneapolis, through its Director of Public Works, Tim Sexton, officially handed over a packer garbage truck to our City of Eldoret, ready for shipment to Kenya,” Bii said.
He said the discussions held during the anniversary focused on practical ways of strengthening Eldoret’s solid waste management system.
“This is a direct outcome of the engagements we held last year during the 25th anniversary of our sister-city relationship, where we discussed how to strengthen Eldoret’s solid waste management,” the governor said.
The packer truck is expected to increase the city’s capacity to collect and transport solid waste. Its compaction system allows garbage to be compressed during collection, making it possible to carry larger volumes in fewer trips.
The enclosed system is also expected to minimise waste spillage during transportation and contribute to cleaner streets and public spaces.
Bii said the donation would complement measures already being undertaken by the county government to improve waste management and the appearance of Eldoret.
“The arrival of this truck will strengthen our waste collection capacity and complement the work we are undertaking to improve the overall outlook of our City of Champions,” he said.
The donation comes as Eldoret continues to expand, creating increased demand for reliable waste collection services in residential estates, commercial areas and other parts of the city.
The county government has been working to improve its waste management infrastructure and equipment as part of efforts to provide cleaner and more sustainable urban services.
Bii thanked Minneapolis for its continued support, saying the partnership was producing practical benefits for Eldoret residents.
“We appreciate the City of Minneapolis for standing with Eldoret as we continue on the path of building a modern, clean and sustainable city,” he said.
Once shipped to Kenya, the truck is expected to be incorporated into Eldoret’s existing waste collection operations.
The latest support highlights the practical role of the sister-city partnership, with cooperation between Eldoret and Minneapolis extending beyond formal engagements to projects aimed at improving urban services.
The county government expects the additional equipment to strengthen its waste collection operations and support efforts to maintain Eldoret as a cleaner and more sustainable City of Champions.
