An Eldoret resident has formally petitioned the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to ban long-distance trucks from passing through Eldoret town, citing growing safety, congestion, and environmental concerns.
Albert Kimutai, a local resident and road safety advocate, submitted the petition on April 19, urging authorities to redirect these trucks to the Eldoret Southern Bypass — a road specifically designed to ease heavy vehicle traffic away from the town center.
Recent Fatal Accident Highlights Urgent Need
Kimutai’s plea follows a tragic accident on April 18, where a long-distance truck collided with a motorcycle, claiming the life of a passenger.
“The current situation is untenable,” Kimutai stated in his letter. “Our town roads, like Uganda Road, are overwhelmed. These roads weren’t built for this level of truck traffic.”
His petition emphasizes that frequent accidents, deteriorating infrastructure, and increasing air and noise pollution are pushing Eldoret’s urban systems to the brink.
Urban Growth Demands Action
Eldoret’s growing population and vehicle numbers have significantly increased congestion within the town. Residents, including schoolchildren, cyclists, and pedestrians, face heightened daily risks due to the unchecked movement of long-haul freight trucks within the CBD and nearby neighborhoods.
Kimutai insists that the Southern Bypass, which features overpass interchanges at Ngeria, Kapseret, and Leseru, must be utilized as originally intended.
“Redirecting trucks via the Southern Bypass will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and protect our roads,” the petition reads.
Call for Enforcement and Public Awareness
The petition also calls on KeNHA to work with Uasin Gishu County authorities and traffic police to establish a firm enforcement mechanism. Suggested measures include:
- Mandatory use of the bypass by all long-distance trucks
- Clear road signage and monitoring systems
- Public awareness campaigns targeting drivers and logistics firms
“This isn’t just about traffic — it’s about saving lives and ensuring sustainable urban development,” Kimutai concluded.
Community Reaction and Next Steps
The petition has sparked widespread conversation among Eldoret residents, many expressing support for stronger regulation of heavy-duty trucks in the town center. While KeNHA has yet to issue an official response, local leaders have indicated growing interest in addressing the issue.
