Uasin Gishu County has taken a bold step towards enhancing foundational education by launching the construction of 90 new Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) classrooms and 13 administrative offices across six sub-counties. The transformative project, led by the County Department of Education, is a major investment aimed at providing a better learning environment for young learners in the region.
Alongside the classrooms and offices, the project will also see the development of 38 toilet facilities, ensuring improved hygiene standards for ECDE centres. These upgrades are part of a broader commitment by the county government to support the holistic growth and development of young children through quality infrastructure.
The implementation phase officially began this week following a successful and transparent competitive tendering process. Contractors who won the bids have now been handed over their respective construction sites, signaling the start of actual building works.
Chief Officer for Education, Eunice Suter, officiated the site handover ceremony in Malakwen, Ainabkoi Sub-County on Tuesday. She emphasized the importance of timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
“We need a conducive environment for our learners. Quality work is not negotiable, and all contractors must strictly adhere to the set standards,” Suter said.
She also mentioned that continuous inspections will be conducted throughout the project to ensure compliance with all design and safety specifications.
The county government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, has prioritized ECDE as a critical area in education development. The initiative reflects the administration’s broader goal to create child-friendly and inclusive learning spaces that lay a strong foundation for academic and social development.
Director for Education, Joseph Karoney, echoed the call for collaboration, urging local communities to fully support the project by working hand in hand with contractors.
“We urge stakeholders to create a supportive environment for the construction teams to ensure timely and efficient delivery,” Karoney noted.
Also in attendance during the site handover were Fredrick Serem, Acting Sub-County Administrator for Ainabkoi, and Education Coordinator Dorcas Komen, who both praised the initiative as a major step forward for early education in Uasin Gishu.
As the project moves forward, residents can expect not only improved ECDE facilities but also employment opportunities and community development, making this a win-win initiative for both education and local growth.
