The Uasin Gishu County Government has suspended approximately 100 enforcement officers following a protest over alleged failure to pay allowances amounting to KSh 29,000 per employee for their participation in preparations for the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations.
The officers reportedly staged a protest after failing to receive the money they expected for their involvement in organising the national celebrations, which were held on October 20, 2026, at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
According to a report by Hubz Media Africa, some of the affected employees received suspension letters dated October 21, just a day after the national event. The letters were reportedly issued by Ruth Someoi, the County Chief Officer for Devolution and Public Administration.
One of the affected officers, who spoke anonymously, claimed that the team had undergone approximately one month of intensive training under the Kenya Defence Forces in preparation for the national celebrations.
The suspension letters reportedly accuse the officers of engaging in unauthorised picketing on October 21, warning that the alleged misconduct could attract disciplinary action, including possible summary dismissal.
The affected employees were also instructed to immediately cease performing their official duties as the county government initiates disciplinary proceedings.
The letters further outlined the officers’ remuneration arrangements during the suspension period, indicating that they would receive half their basic salaries, full house allowances and continued medical benefits, subject to the conditions provided.
The officers have reportedly been given 21 days from the dates of their respective suspension letters to submit written representations explaining their involvement in the alleged unauthorised protest.
At the centre of the dispute is the KSh 29,000 allowance that the officers say they expected to receive for their role in preparations for the national celebrations. However, the exact terms of the payment arrangement and whether the amount had been formally approved remain unclear.
The county government had not publicly addressed the allegations in the report or explained the circumstances surrounding the delayed payments and subsequent suspensions.
The development has sparked questions about the welfare of county employees engaged in preparations for major national functions, particularly regarding the fulfilment of payment commitments and the handling of grievances raised by workers.
The suspensions come days after Eldoret hosted the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium, an event that brought together national leaders, government officials, security agencies and other stakeholders from across the country.
