A City on Edge: Eldoret Retreats into Silence Ahead of Possible Protests

Majority of businesses in Eldoret town remained shut on Monday morning amid fears of unrest tied to the Saba Saba demonstrations being held in various parts of the country. Most shops, supermarkets, and market stalls within the central business district did not open, with traders citing uncertainty and concerns over possible violence or looting.

Relative Calm Despite Tension

Although business activity was low, the town remained relatively calm throughout the day. There were no reports of violence or demonstrations within Eldoret, and security officers maintained a visible presence in strategic areas.

Low Public Activity

Public transport operated at minimal capacity, and the usually busy streets appeared deserted. Few pedestrians and vehicles were seen in the town centre as many residents chose to remain indoors.

Calls for Continued Calm

Residents welcomed the calm but noted that fear alone had significantly disrupted daily life and economic activities. Authorities have called for continued peace and assured the public of safety and protection of property.
