Water Crisis: Eldoret Residents Speak Out

Water is essential for life, yet residents of Uasin Gishu County are facing an alarming crisis. Many have raised concerns over its safety, availability, and the rising costs imposed by Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (Eldowas).

In recent weeks, Langas Estate residents in Kapseret Constituency have reported serious issues with water quality. Some even claim that consuming the water has led to severe stomach pains. Among them is Sharif Wabaso, a resident of Teleview, who described his distressing experience.

“After drinking the water, I suffered severe stomach pains. I urge Eldowas to take immediate action and ensure the water supplied is safe,” Wabaso stated. He also criticized the frequent rationing and increasing water prices, urging authorities to intervene.

The rising frustration comes just days after Eldowas reassured the public about its water quality. On February 24, the board released a statement emphasizing its commitment to providing clean and safe water. According to Eldowas, its Water Quality Assurance Section continuously monitors water at all stages from production to consumer distribution. They also conduct laboratory tests and compliance checks to ensure the highest standards are met.

Furthermore, Eldowas reassured residents that wastewater treatment and discharge comply with national environmental and public health regulations. These measures, they insist, prevent contamination and safeguard public health.

However, despite these assurances, residents remain skeptical. Many question why, if the water is properly treated, some consumers continue to experience health issues. Others are more concerned about erratic supply and rising costs, which place an additional burden on households already struggling with inflation.

Water scarcity

Water scarcity in Langas is not a new issue. Over the years, residents have endured periodic shortages, forcing them to buy expensive water from vendors. For families living on tight budgets, these extra expenses are unsustainable.

As complaints grow louder, residents are calling for swift action. They demand better transparency from Eldowas and stronger regulatory oversight to ensure water safety. They also want fair pricing and a more reliable supply system.

For now, the water crisis remains unresolved. But as pressure mounts, authorities will need to act quickly because when it comes to water, there is no room for compromise.
