China Square is preparing to open its Eldoret branch on August 3, 2026, marking another major shift in the city’s fast-growing retail market. The chain is known for offering a broad selection of household goods, including kitchenware, furniture, electronics, appliances, clothing and personal-care products at competitive prices.
Its pricing advantage is largely linked to scale. With several branches in Kenya and a wider regional presence, China Square can purchase products in bulk, negotiate directly with manufacturers and distribute large shipments across multiple outlets. Smaller traders, who often buy through middlemen or import in smaller quantities, may struggle to secure similar prices.
For shoppers, the arrival is expected to bring more variety and stronger price competition. For small and medium-sized enterprises selling household products, however, the opening has created understandable concern. Businesses that compete mainly on price may face shrinking margins, while retailers offering specialised products, reliable after-sales service, convenience and customer relationships may be better positioned to survive.
The market is also facing uncertainty over import costs. KRA calculates taxes using the value of imported goods, while reported changes to freight valuation could increase the landed cost of some shipments. This may eventually affect retail prices, although the impact will differ depending on products, suppliers and import arrangements.
China Square’s arrival should therefore be viewed as more than the opening of another shop. Now that Eldoret holds city status and continues attracting investment, businesses should expect more national and international chains to enter sectors such as retail, hospitality, healthcare, construction, entertainment and professional services.
Local businesses must prepare early. Competing purely through low prices may become increasingly difficult. The stronger response will be better service, specialised stock, digital marketing, efficient sourcing, delivery options and customer loyalty. Eldoret’s growth presents opportunities, but it also signals a more demanding era of competition.
