Police in Uasin Gishu County are investigating the deaths of a young couple in Sogomo, on the outskirts of Eldoret, in an incident suspected to have been linked to a love triangle.
The couple, a 26-year-old teacher and her 32-year-old husband, were found dead at their home near the University of Eldoret along the Eldoret-Ziwa road.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the incident, saying officers were called to the home after the man was found hanging from a tree within the compound.
“Apparently she had consumed the poison and died in the house,” Sicharani said, referring to the woman, whose body was discovered inside the house.
According to the police commander, officers found a container believed to have contained a poisonous chemical near the woman’s body as they examined the scene.
Police also recovered a suicide note believed to have been written by the man before his death. Sicharani said investigators were examining the contents of the note as they sought to establish what happened before the deaths.
Neighbours claimed the man had suspected that his wife was involved in a romantic relationship with another man at the school where she taught. Police have not, however, established the allegation as the cause of the deaths, and investigations are continuing.
There were also conflicting claims from neighbours about the circumstances leading to the woman’s death. Some alleged that the man could have forced her to consume the poisonous substance before taking his own life.
Police have not confirmed the allegation.
