Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County – April 2025
Eldoret is rapidly solidifying its position as a major economic and industrial hub in Kenya. This momentum was showcased during the Eldoret International Business Summit 2025, a three-day event that brought together government officials, investors, and business leaders to explore new opportunities in trade, investment, and manufacturing.
Strategic Growth and Infrastructure Development
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, the summit’s chief guest, underscored Eldoret’s strategic location and enhanced infrastructure. “Eldoret is not just a hub for business; it is becoming a destination of choice,” he stated. A key highlight was the ongoing expansion of the Eldoret International Airport, where the runway is being extended by 500 meters. This development will accommodate larger cargo planes, boosting the region’s capacity for international exports.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen echoed this sentiment, noting that the airport upgrade will reduce reliance on Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, lowering export costs and increasing efficiency for regional traders.
Major Investment in Export Processing Zone
One of the summit’s landmark announcements was the establishment of a 135-acre Export Processing Zone (EPZ), formalized under Legal Notice 31 of 2024. The EPZ is expected to attract investments in agro-processing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT-enabled services. According to EPZA Chairman Richard Cheruyot, the project will transform Eldoret into a center for manufacturing and global trade, creating over 3,000 direct jobs and thousands more through supporting industries.
Agriculture and Trade Integration
Agriculture remained a central focus, with Governor Bii reaffirming the county’s commitment to farmers. Eldoret’s high-value crops—such as coffee, tea, avocado, and macadamia—have increasing global demand. “Through improved logistics, we will ensure our farmers can access international markets faster,” he said. Strategic partnerships with the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) are being formed to help farmers meet export standards and boost productivity.
A Boost for Local Businesses
To support micro and small enterprises, the county is constructing the Eldoret 64 Ultra Modern Market, which will offer over 3,000 business spaces, alongside amenities such as underground parking and health facilities. Willy Kennei, Chairperson of the KNCCI Uasin Gishu Chapter, praised the initiative, calling it a game changer for local commerce and a critical outlet for farmers and traders.
A Vision for the Future
The summit concluded with a shared vision for sustainable development through infrastructure, industrialization, and agricultural innovation. With strategic public-private partnerships and visionary leadership, Eldoret is on a clear path to becoming one of Kenya’s top economic powerhouses.
