Watching movies at the cinema is slowly making a comeback, with more audiences showing interest in experiencing major film releases on the big screen.
Unlike in the past, when local moviegoers often waited longer to access new international films, cinemas in Kenya can now screen many major titles within the same release period as other markets around the world. This allows audiences in Eldoret to follow global movie conversations while the films are still new.
The current international cinema calendar includes major productions such as The Odyssey, which opened on July 17, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31, 2026. More family, action, horror and comedy films are also expected throughout August.
The renewed interest is being supported by blockbuster releases, improved cinema experiences and the social appeal of watching films with friends and family. Large screens, powerful sound systems and the shared reactions of an audience offer an experience that home streaming cannot fully reproduce.
Recent figures also point to a gradual recovery in the global cinema business. Worldwide box-office revenue increased by about 5 per cent in 2025, while the number of cinema tickets sold rose by approximately 3 per cent. However, attendance remains below pre-pandemic levels, meaning the industry is recovering but has not yet fully returned to its previous strength.
The strong performance of recent releases has continued into 2026. The Odyssey, for example, recorded a global opening of more than $260 million, demonstrating that audiences are still willing to turn out in large numbers for films presented as major cinematic events.
For movie lovers in Eldoret, the growing access to new global releases means they no longer have to wait for films to appear on streaming platforms or rely on spoilers circulating online.
They can watch the newest movies on the big screen and experience them alongside the rest of the world.
