Eldoret City Gets Major Boost in Garbage Collection

The City of Eldoret is set to improve garbage collection and waste management following the acquisition of new litter bins and skip containers as the county steps up efforts to maintain cleanliness in Kenya’s fifth city.

The equipment was officially received at the City of Eldoret offices in a ceremony led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, marking a key milestone in the county government’s strategy to transform Eldoret into a clean, green and smart urban centre.

Governor Bii said the initiative forms part of a broader plan to address the challenges associated with the city’s rapid growth, increasing population and expanding commercial activities.

“As Eldoret continues to grow, we are implementing deliberate plans to ensure our city evolves into a clean, green and smart urban centre,” Governor Bii said.

He noted that rapid urbanisation and increased business activities had placed growing pressure on existing waste management systems, making investment in improved garbage collection infrastructure necessary.

“Today’s receipt of litter bins and skip containers at the City of Eldoret offices is part of our efforts to strengthen waste management and promote responsible waste disposal,” he stated.

The governor added that the county would strategically distribute the bins and containers across the city to improve waste collection and maintain clean public spaces.

“The bins and containers will be strategically stationed across the city to improve waste collection and keep our public spaces clean,” Governor Bii affirmed.

How Eldoret Will Benefit

The new waste management equipment is expected to benefit residents, traders and businesses by making garbage disposal more accessible and improving the efficiency of waste collection.

The strategically positioned litter bins will provide convenient disposal points in busy areas, including the Central Business District, residential estates and markets, while the larger skip containers will serve locations that generate significant amounts of waste.

The investment is also expected to improve public health and environmental management by reducing indiscriminate dumping, preventing waste from obstructing drainage channels and limiting conditions that encourage the spread of disease-carrying pests.

In addition, improved waste collection is expected to enhance Eldoret’s image as a clean and attractive destination for investors, tourists and conference organisers, supporting the county’s ambition to establish the city as a competitive regional business hub.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness by using designated bins and adopting proper waste disposal practices.

The county says cooperation between residents, businesses and local authorities will be crucial to sustaining a cleaner environment as Eldoret continues to develop into a modern and sustainable city.
