A kaleidoscope of color, culture, and couture unfolded at Rupas Mall grounds as the 8th Edition of the Kitenge Fashion Festival and Awards took center stage on Saturday. With each strut down the runway, a powerful message echoed louder than the applause: African fashion is not just fabric it’s identity in motion.

Fashion with a message

This year’s edition, themed around bold expression and cultural pride, drew designers, models, and cultural tastemakers from across the region. But beyond the sequins and spotlights, the festival carried a deeper mission — to reignite pride in African heritage and challenge the continent to wear its culture unapologetically.

“We are officially stepping into a world where tradition meets bold expression,” the organizers declared via their official Facebook page. “This isn’t just fabric. This is heritage woven with pride, color, and unmatched creativity.” These sentiment were not only spoken it was worn.

From modern takes on traditional wear to avant-garde reinterpretations of Kitenge patterns, the runway became a moving gallery of Africa’s sartorial evolution. Every design told a story of lineage, resilience, and modern African brilliance. The crowd responded with admiration, cheers, and standing ovations.

Honouring Talents and innovation

Award segments highlighted standout talents from rising designers to influential stylists who are shaping the next chapter of African fashion. These recognitions weren’t merely ceremonial. They served as a clarion call: the future of African fashion belongs to those who dare to be different, yet remain grounded in their roots.

A call to the youth

Cultural commentators and guest speakers used the platform to urge the younger generation to see Kitenge as more than occasion wear. It’s a statement, they said. A reclaiming of narrative. An artistic rebellion against fashion homogeneity. As drums rolled and lights dimmed, the message remained clear Africa’s identity is not behind us; it’s stitched into the fabric of now.

The Kitenge Fashion Festival may have concluded, but its echo lingers. In every street style inspired by the show. In every conversation sparked. And in every young creative reminded that honoring culture isn’t outdated it’s revolutionary.
