
The County Government of Uasin Gishu has issued a public health alert following a confirmed outbreak of Mpox (Monkeypox). The Department of Health Services is urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to curb the spread.
What is Mpox?
Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease similar to smallpox, but less severe. It can spread from animals to humans and also from person to person through direct contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated items such as bedding and clothing.
Common symptoms
According to health officials, the disease presents with:
Fever
Headache
Muscle aches
Swollen lymph nodes
Chills and exhaustion
A rash starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body, including the genitals and palms.
How to protect yourself
Residents are advised to:
Avoid contact with suspected or confirmed cases
Maintain good hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizer
Avoid sharing personal items like towels, utensils, and clothing
Disinfect surfaces regularly
Use protective equipment when caring for infected individuals
Isolate if you show symptoms and seek medical attention

“If you experience any symptoms, visit the nearest health facility immediately. Do not self-medicate or interact closely with others until cleared by a health professional,” the notice states.
